What is the difference between lossy and lossless audio formats?

Lossless formats such as FLAC and WAV preserve every sample of the original recording, so nothing is ever discarded. Lossy formats like MP3 and OGG analyze which sounds human hearing is least likely to notice, usually quiet details masked by louder ones, and throw them away to shrink the file. That trade is permanent: once detail is gone, no later conversion can recover it.

Will converting an MP3 to FLAC make it sound better?

It will not, and this is worth understanding before you fill a drive with oversized files. FLAC faithfully stores whatever it is given, and what it is given here is audio that MP3 compression already stripped. The result is a much larger file with exactly the sound of the source MP3. Convert to FLAC only when your source is genuinely lossless.

Does my audio get uploaded to a server for conversion?

No, at no point. The conversion runs inside your browser tab using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so the file goes from your disk into the tab's memory and back out as a download. Demo tracks, client audio, and private recordings never travel across the network, which is a guarantee upload-based converter sites cannot make.

Why does the first conversion take longer than the rest?

On first use the page fetches the conversion engine, a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg, and your browser caches it. That one-off download is the only wait involved; afterwards every conversion starts the moment you press Convert.

Which audio format should I actually choose?

Pick MP3 when compatibility matters most, since virtually every device and app made this century plays it. Choose FLAC for archiving originals, because it halves the size of WAV while remaining mathematically identical to it.
