Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?
GIF stores every frame as a complete separately-compressed image using a scheme from the dial-up era, and it cannot express the idea that consecutive frames are nearly identical. H.264 is built on exactly that idea, encoding mostly the differences between frames. The same animation routinely shrinks to a small fraction of its GIF size with the quality intact.
What is yuv420p and why does the tool use it?
It is the pixel format describing how color information is stored, and it records color at half the resolution of brightness, a trick human vision barely registers. More importantly, it is the one format effectively every phone, browser, and social platform decodes. MP4s written any other way can show as black or broken frames on some devices, so this tool standardizes on it.
What does the faststart option in the output mean?
MP4 files keep an index describing where every frame lives, and by default some writers place it at the end of the file. Faststart moves that index to the front, so browsers and apps can begin playing while the rest still loads. For anything embedded on the web, it is the difference between instant playback and a blank pause.
Will the MP4 autoplay and loop the way my GIF did?
On most social platforms and modern sites, yes in effect: short muted MP4s autoplay inline, and players or embed settings handle looping. Many large platforms already convert uploaded GIFs to video behind the scenes for exactly this reason. Doing the conversion yourself just means you control the quality and keep the smaller file from the start.
Is my GIF sent anywhere to be converted?
No part of it, at any stage. The frames are decoded and re-encoded to H.264 by ffmpeg running as WebAssembly right in the tab, and the MP4 arrives as a download from your own browser's memory. Original artwork and unpublished animations remain exclusively yours, with no third-party copy created along the way.
Why did my GIF's colors shift slightly after conversion?
Two color systems changed hands. The GIF's palette entries were mapped into video color space, and yuv420p then stored the color channel at reduced resolution for compatibility. On flat-color pixel art you may notice faint softening at sharp color boundaries. For photographic and interface animations the change is effectively invisible.
Should I use MP4 instead of GIF on my website?
Almost always. A muted looping MP4 in a video element behaves just like a GIF visually while loading many times faster, which helps both visitors on mobile data and your page speed scores. Reserve actual GIFs for the few contexts, like some email clients, that cannot play video.
Can I convert a GIF to video offline?
Yes, provided the page has been opened once before so the browser holds the cached engine, which is a one-off fetch of about 31 MB. From then on the conversion runs with no connection, useful when working through a folder of old animations somewhere without decent internet.
Are there any usage limits?
