How is reading time calculated?
Reading time divides your word count by 225 words per minute, the widely cited average for silent adult reading. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, which suits presentations and voiceovers. Both are estimates: dense technical writing reads slower and familiar narrative reads faster, so treat the figure as a planning guide rather than a stopwatch.
Why does my word count differ slightly from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Every counter tokenises text a little differently. Hyphenated compounds, em dashes without spaces, slashes between words and stray punctuation can each be read as one word or two depending on the rules applied. Differences of a handful of words on a long document are completely normal; pick one counter and stay consistent with it.
Is my text uploaded anywhere while it is being counted?
No. The counting runs entirely in your browser as you type, so nothing you paste is transmitted, logged or stored. You can load the page, disconnect from the internet and keep counting. That makes it safe for confidential drafts, client work and anything else you would not paste into an ordinary web form.
Should I look at characters with spaces or without spaces?
It depends on the platform you are writing for. Most social networks and form fields count every character including spaces, so that is usually the figure that matters. Counts without spaces are mostly used in translation and typesetting work, where the space-free figure gives a steadier measure of the actual volume of text.
How are sentences and paragraphs detected?
Sentences are split on terminal punctuation such as full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, while paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Abbreviations can occasionally register as sentence ends, so the sentence figure is a close estimate rather than gospel. Paragraph counts are exact provided you leave a blank line between paragraphs as you write.
How many words is a 5 minute speech?
Around 650 words at a typical speaking pace of 130 words per minute. Nervous speakers often rush, and pauses for slides or laughter slow things down, so drafting slightly under the limit is safer. Paste your script into the counter and check the speaking time before you rehearse.
How long does it take to read 1000 words?
