How does raising the CRF number make the file smaller?
Each step up the CRF scale tells the encoder to tolerate slightly more approximation per frame, and the savings compound across thousands of frames. The encoder discards detail in an order tuned to human vision, so flat areas and subtle textures give way first while edges and motion survive. A few points of CRF can halve a file before the change becomes obvious.
Should I lower the resolution as well as the quality?
For the biggest savings, yes. Halving the frame dimensions quarters the number of pixels the encoder must describe, which is a far larger lever than quality settings alone. The optional 1280 or 854 pixel caps suit videos headed for phones and chat apps, where the screen would have downscaled the picture anyway and the shed pixels are never missed.
Will the compressed video look noticeably worse?
At moderate settings, most footage survives with little visible change, because the encoder discards what eyes overlook before touching what they track. Strain shows first in dim scenes, smoke, water, and confetti, where fine chaotic detail turns slightly blocky. Compress a short representative section first when the footage matters, and judge on the screen you will actually watch it on.
Is the video uploaded somewhere to be compressed?
Never. Compression runs on your own processor through a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg embedded in the page, so the file moves from your disk to the tab's memory and back as a download. A recording of a private meeting or your children's concert has no copy anywhere else, which is not something an upload-based compressor can offer.
How long should I expect compression to take?
Plan on minutes rather than seconds for anything substantial. Every frame is decoded and re-encoded in the browser, single-threaded, which is honest work but slower than an installed desktop encoder. A rough guide is that longer and higher-resolution sources take proportionally longer, so start a big job when you can leave the tab open and let it run.
How do I reduce video file size without losing quality?
Strictly you always lose something, but you can keep the loss invisible. Use a moderate CRF increase before reaching for resolution caps, compress the original rather than an already-compressed copy, and check a sample first. Footage that was lightly compressed at recording time has the most fat to trim painlessly.
Why is my compressed video barely smaller than the original?
The source was probably already compressed efficiently, often by a phone or a platform that encoded it tightly on export.
