Which video formats can this extract audio from?
Anything ffmpeg can open, which in practice covers the formats people actually encounter: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, and AVI among them. Each is just a different container wrapping an audio stream, and the extractor decodes whichever codec it finds inside and re-encodes it as a standard MP3 that plays anywhere.
Why do WebM files need special handling for audio?
WebM carries its sound as Vorbis or, more commonly now, Opus, both open royalty-free codecs the format was built around. They are excellent technically but patchy in support outside browsers, which is why a WebM soundtrack often will not play in older software or car systems. Re-encoding it as MP3 trades a little efficiency for playback certainty everywhere.
Is quality lost pulling audio out of a video?

Does any part of my video reach the internet here?
None of it, in either direction. The container is opened and the audio re-encoded by ffmpeg running as WebAssembly inside the tab, on your processor, in your memory. After the engine is cached from a first visit, you could pull the network cable mid-job and the extraction would finish exactly the same.
How is this different from the MP4 to MP3 tool?
The job is identical; the doorway is wider. The MP4 tool is tuned for the single most common case, while this one accepts the whole spread of containers, from browser-generated WebM through venerable AVI to MKV rips of your own discs. If your file has an unusual extension, start here rather than renaming it and hoping.
How do I get audio from a screen recording?
