How do the start and end second fields work?
You give two numbers: where the clip should begin and where it should stop, both counted in seconds from the very start of the file. Everything between those two points is kept and everything outside them is dropped. For times past the first minute, convert in your head first, so a passage at 2:45 is entered as 165.
Why is the trimmed clip re-encoded rather than just snipped?
MP3 audio is stored as a chain of frames, each holding about 26 milliseconds of sound, and frames near a cut also depend on data carried over from their neighbors. Cutting raw frames at an arbitrary second would leave a corrupt or clicking boundary. Decoding, cutting precisely, and re-encoding produces a clean clip that starts and ends exactly where you asked.
Does trimming reduce the audio quality?
The re-encode involved means the clip passes through one extra lossy generation, which for a single trim is practically inaudible on speech and casual listening. It becomes a consideration only if the same clip is trimmed and re-trimmed repeatedly. When several clips are needed, take each one directly from the original file rather than from earlier clips.
Is my recording uploaded while I trim it?
It never leaves your device. The cutting is done by ffmpeg compiled into the page itself, working on the file inside your browser's memory, and the clip downloads straight from there. A confidential disciplinary meeting or an unreleased demo can be trimmed with the same privacy as editing on your own desktop, because functionally that is what this is.
How do I get several different clips from one long file?
Run the trimmer once per clip, entering fresh start and end seconds each time and always loading the same original recording. Since your file stays local, repeating the process costs nothing and there is no quota counting your attempts. Jot down the timestamps you want as you listen through, then work down the list.
How do I cut out the middle of an audio file?
A single trim keeps one continuous region, so removing a middle section takes two passes: save the portion before the unwanted part as one clip, the portion after it as another, and join them in any audio editor. For the common jobs, tightening the start and end, one pass does it.
